TTIP: DAY OF ACTION 11 October

ttip-flyer1

38 Degrees members in Taunton Deane, are hitting the streets on Saturday 11th October at High Street, Taunton to spread the word about TTIP. And this time it’s MEPs who are going to be feeling the pressure.

The team in Taunton Deane will be handing out leaflets, encouraging everyone they meet to call their MEPs and find out where they stand on this dangerous trade deal. Are you in?

MEPs are going to be the ones who’ll eventually vote on TTIP, so convincing them it needs to be scrapped is crucial. Normally MEPs spend most of their time sat in offices in Brussels – imagine the impact when they start receiving hundreds of calls from the people they’re supposed to represent.

right now, there’s a deal being worked out in secret between officials in the US and the EU. If it goes through it could permanently privatise the NHS, put the profits of big business ahead of our environment, and even stop the government raising the minimum wage in the future.

It’s called the ‘Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership’, or ‘TTIP‘ (pronounced tee-tip) for short. The deal is being negotiated on behind closed doors, but leaked details suggest it will:

  • Allow companies to sue governments if they make decisions affecting big businesses profits – like capping energy prices, introducing plain packet cigarettes, or raising the minimum wage.
  • Stop future governments from rolling back privatisation of our public services, like the NHS, energy companies, or the Royal Mail.
  • Relax the rules which protect consumers, our environment, our welfare and health services, to much weaker levels seen in the US.
