Local government cuts could force councils to the edge of bankruptcy warns Unite

Local councils already at breaking point could be pushed to the edge of bankruptcy warned Britain’s largest union, Unite as the Tory-led government revealed plans today (Thursday 18 December) which could see some local authority budgets slashed by a further 6.4 per cent.
Councils have already seen their budgets slashed by 27 per cent since the coalition came to power according to the National Audit Office (NAO) with authorities serving poorer areas of the UK being hit disproportionately the hardest.
There are now half a million fewer people employed by local authorities serving their communities since the coalition came to power.
Commenting Unite national officer Fiona Farmer said: “Local councils are already at breaking point with services being cut to the bone or stopped completely. Many are staring into the financial abyss of bankruptcy because of this latest round of cuts which will eat into key services we all rely on.
“Local government needs a fair funding settlement. It is simply not sustainable to expect councils serving some of the poorest communities in the country to bear the brunt of the Tory-led government’s addiction to austerity.”http://www.unitetheunion.org/news/local-government-cuts-could-force-councils-to-the-edge-of-bankruptcy-warns-unite/
